As part of the Culture and Compliance Chronicles podcast š§, along with Ropes & Gray LLP partner Amanda Raad, we had the pleasure of interviewing Klaus Moosmayer, former Member of the Executive Committee and Chief Ethics, Risk and Compliance Officer at Novartis and current Member of The Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bank. Klaus is also co-chair of the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on Good Governance (as if he needs any introduction š).
In our thirty minute ā±ļø conversation, we delved into the importance of an integrated assurance approach to risk management and governanceābreaking down organizational silos to foster collaboration across risk, compliance, strategy, HR, and legal functions. This is a topic that Klaus is quite passionate about.Ā
When we discussed this topic in 2024, at the Transparency International International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) in Lithuania (with thanks to Roberto Perez-Rocha and Cecilia Müller Torbrand), he said to me, āRichard, we need to make this a movement āā
In the podcast, Klaus shares practical examples from his career, including how crisis moments can drive meaningful change and the value of crowdsourcing a code of ethics to truly engage employees. As Klaus shared, āA code of ethics is the heart ā„ļø of the organization.ā
He also shared his views on behavioral science and its role in shaping ethical decision-making, along with actionable insights for boards and compliance professionals.
We also discussed the importance of 'stewardship' as walking the 'tightrope' šŖ¢ between being a 'partner' to the business and also being very clear about guardrails. I found this topic particularly resonating and time-sensitive in our world š of volatility.Ā
